Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Levally West

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Levally West held an earthen ringfort on a north-facing slope above bogland until recent digging removed it. A house now occupies the flat ground where the fort stood, denying the site to every viewer who arrives expecting walls or ditches. The loss is not mysterious; human hands changed the place and stopped the old form from continuing.
On a N-facing slope in reclaimed grassland overlooking bogland. According to local information, there was an earthen 'fort' here which was levelled quite recently. A house now occupies the site and no visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
