Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Knockaninane West

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Knockaninane West holds a broken earthen ring on a hilltop, its swelling bank still marking a lost boundary while the southern half has vanished beneath soil and memory. Local story claims the fort served as a children's burial ground, transforming an ordinary pasture edge into a place where adult anger must quiet itself. The surviving northern curve does not decorate the landscape; it witnesses the difference between what people record and what they protect.
In pasture, at the summit of a hill. The rath is indicated on the 1894 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 45m) crossed by a NNW-SSE field boundary to the SW of the centre. The enclosing earthen bank (Wth 6.8m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.55m) survives NW-S abutting the field boundary at SW. No visible surface trace of the rath is evident on the SW side of the field boundary. The interior is domed, in keeping with the profile of the hill top. According to local information, this rath was used as a children's burial ground (KE059-015001-).
