Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kingsland

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts hide in plain sight, wearing farm boundaries and forgotten fences instead of grand stone walls. In Kingsland, that is exactly what the fort became: a ring of living hedgerow on Tim Ford's land, recorded by O'Leary in 1918 and still without a known exact location. It may have begun as a human rath, but it has spent centuries becoming a fairy fort, shifting from history into the kind of place people stop joking about after dark.
According to O'Leary (1918, 116) 'there is a lios with fences standing to Tim Fords land'. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
