Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Situated on the NW side of a ridge running NE-SW, in pasture with excellent views from NW-N. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as an oval-shaped earthwork (long-axis E-W). Monument described as an oval-shaped area (dims. 35m NW-SE; 22m NE-SW) enclosed by a bank and external fosse. The low bank is reduced to a steep scarp in places. A gap (Wth at top 3.4m; basal Wth 2m) at SSE may represent the entrance. A very narrow fosse is visible from ESE-SE-SSE. The interior has a gentle NE-facing slope with vague traces of cultivation ridges running ENE-WSW. A possible house site (WM018-095001-) is visible in S quadrant. Levelled ringfort visible as a faint roughly oval-shaped cropmark on Digital Globe aerial photography. Compiled by: Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien Date of upload: 05 February 2019
