Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilmartin Lower

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Kilmartin Lower is a 34m earthen ring, 2m high, partly hidden by trees in pasture. It may contain a man-made underground passage, and it has stood since before records, shaping local memory as much as stone. People may have lived, hidden or worshipped there, while later stories gave the fort to fairies because its purpose resisted easy explanation.
In pasture. Roughly circular area (diam. 34m) defined by earthen bank (H 2m). Bank and interior partially overgrown with deciduous trees. Possible Man-made underground passage (CO061-019002-) in interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
