Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Keelhilla

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Keelhilla holds a thirty-metre earthen ring on an east-facing slope, waiting for human hands to remember its shape. It is a fairy fort in local story, but more likely a human home or marker from a forgotten time. The land has been reclaimed for pasture, yet the bank still turns the light and resists the plough.

A fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Keelhilla is a circular early-medieval enclosure, likely dating to between the 5th and 10th centuries, associated with both agricultural settlements and later folklore surrounding faeries. Local tradition may link the site to supernatural beings, as is common with such features in Irish and Scottish landscapes.
