Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gortavranner

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Gortavranner, County Cork, is a vanished earthen ringfort, levelled into rough pasture on an east-facing slope. It appears only as a hachured circle about twenty-three metres across on the 1842 Ordnance Survey map. The land has taken back its shape, leaving behind a name that suggests either human arrogance or fairy mischief.
Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as hachured circular area (diam. c. 23m). In rough pasture, on E-facing slope. Levelled; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
