Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Garranes (barrymore By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are often little more than a ridge of soil, but Garranes kept its circle until ploughs and men erased it. The 1842 map still shows a thirty-metre ring on the south-east slope, while the 1904 map reduces it to a bend in a field fence. What looked like a fairy trick may have been an ordinary home, its wall forgotten so quickly it became a joke.
On SE-facing slope. Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m). Indicated as curve in field fence on 1904 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
