Magic circles are not fantasy here, they are memory. The fort still holds its shape in wet Kilkenny earth, a round chamber waiting for breath. Freneystown has lived beside it long enough for the boundary to become familiar. What humans forgot, the land kept sharp.

In wet, marshy field, on the E side of slightly rising ground, on the floor of a broad N-S valley, in pasture. Very good views in all directions. A roughly circular area (diam. 38m N-S; 37m E-W) enclosed by a bank (Wth 1m at crest; overall Wth 3.5m; int. H at least 1m; ext. H at least 1.5m). The interior slopes fairly steeply to the E. There is a gap (Wth 2m) in the bank in the SE quadrant. The bank is quite heavily overgrown with thorn bushes. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 2 March 2016
