Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Drumany (drumahaire By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Half the ring is gone, swallowed by slope or forgotten by the field bank that cuts through it, but the remaining curve still holds its shape in the low ground. People walked past this place for generations, calling it a fairy fort because the dead and the strange seem to claim what humans stop understanding. The rushes along the outer ditch still mark the boundary, suggesting the circle resisted erasure even after the entrance vanished.
Situated in a low-lying landscape. This is a D-shaped grass and rush-covered subcircular area (dim. c. 25m E-W) defined by a grass-covered bank (Wth 3-4.3m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.9-1.1m) with an external fosse indicated by a band of rushes (Wth 2.5m). Both features only survive E-SW and fade into the slope NW-E, while the monument is truncated by a N-S field bank at W. The original entrance is not identified. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 September 2008
