Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Dromore (ballintra Ed)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not for entry. They belong to the hidden life that still moves through old land. The fort in Dromore is a broken ring of earth, not a palace or a showpiece. Its edges have softened, but the shape remains. That is enough to remember.
An arc of earthen bank seems to be the N and W sides of either an original subcircular or subrectangular enclosure. The bank is up to 1.7m in height at its NE side and fades out at either end. The ENE end runs into a modern field boundary. A band of intense growth c. 4.3m in width on the external and the NE uphill side of the bank could possibly indicate a silted-up fosse. The interior slopes down towards the SSE. It is located on the SSE shoulder of a WSW-ENE drumlin in an area of fair pasture. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
