Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Dromin (magunihy By., Dromin Ed)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No fairy appears in the facts, though people may have believed it when they first saw the bank rise through grass. What is known is that Dromin holds an earthen ringfort, a circular enclosure about thirty metres across, still marked on the 1846 and 1895 maps. The surviving arc runs from north to south-east, with a broad bank and overgrowth hiding its edges. It stands on a rise in pasture, small enough to walk around quickly but old enough to have outlasted the hands that shaped it.
In pasture, on a rise. The remains of a circular area defined by an arc (C 26m) of bank N-SE. The bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H 1.2m; ext. H 2.3m) is covered in overgrowth. There is a slight trace of a levelled bank, in the form of a low rise, SE-S. The rath is indicated on the 1846 and 1895 OS 6-inch maps as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m).
