Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Dromin (magunihy By., Dromin Ed)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

A thirty-eight-metre earthen ring stands on a SE-facing slope in Dromin, its bank four metres wide and three and a half metres high before a farmyard bit into the north. Field boundaries still radiate from the southern arc like spokes from a hub, and an underground passage lies hidden beneath the rath. The interior has been filled with earth and stone until it matches the yard, yet the circle remains the clearest shape on the land.
In pasture, on a SE-facing slope. A circular area (diam. c. 38m) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4.2m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 3.5m) NE-NW, truncated by a farmyard NW-N and levelled N-NE. The interior has been infilled recently with earth and stone, raising it to the same level as the farmyard. Field boundaries radiate externally from the S arc. A Man-made underground passage (KE057-030001-) is associated with the rath. This is probably the 'one ringed fort' recorded in the 1940s on John Moirarty's land (Schools Manuscript, Co. Kerry).
