Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Dooary

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Dooary, County Laois: a 43m ring of earth and ditch, with a possible gap at the southwest. It is the kind of place where people may have lived, hidden or been excluded, depending on which part of the story they wanted to believe.
A circular area (diam. c. 43m) defined by a bank (Wth c. 4.8m) and fosse (Wth c. 5.2m). Possible original entrance at SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 17 December 2007
