Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Curragh West

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Curragh West is a poorly preserved earthen ringfort on a grassy rise, its subcircular shape marked by a bank at the south and west and a shallow ditch at the northeast. It may have been a dwelling, a boundary or a place of ritual, but time has worn its purpose into ambiguity. The land still holds the ghost of a made shape, inviting imagination to complete what erosion has erased.
On a rise in gently undulating grassland. Very poorly preserved subcircular rath (N-S 35m, E-W 32m) defined by a bank from S to SW; elsewhere a scarp forms the enclosing element. An external fosse is visible at NE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
