Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Crosshaven Hill

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible wall or ditch remains on Crosshaven Hill, yet the grass still holds the ghost of a ringfort above the Owenboy river estuary. The earth forgot the stone or the sea took the memory, leaving behind a vacant circle in the pasture. What is missing is not nothing; it is a shape waiting to be remembered.
In pasture, overlooking Owenboy river estuary to Curraghbinny wood. According to local information, site of ringfort. No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
