Fairy fort and earthen ringfort in Cross (moyarta By.), County Clare, Ireland. A fairy fort is a local name for an old earthen fort or boundary marker, not proof of fairy occupation. The area contains several such earthworks, including Caherduff, which means black fort. These are common across Clare and date from the early medieval period. People built them to mark land, defend homes, or store grain. They are not magical, though they sound it.
