What is recorded here
Craggagh holds a forgotten oval fort where a modern house now stands beside ancient field walls. The earthy bank still rises beside the garden, preserving the shape of a home that preceded the building by centuries. What was built there, who lived there, and when it emptied remains unknown. The fort has lost its name and most of its form, but the ground still marks the place where people stood before the field took it back.
On a slightly elevated rise in a generally commanding position with good views from W–N and overlooked by a small knoll to the SW and within a field system (CL004-102----). Hachured on the 1842 and 1915 eds. of the OS 6-inch maps. A poorly preserved oval enclosure (est. ext. dims. 15m NE–SW; 20m NW–SE) defined by a largely overgrown bank and scarp (H 0.7m to the WSW), totally overgrown between W and NE. A straight field wall (indicated on the 1915 ed. OS 6-inch map) is built on or near the edge of the site from the ENE to SW, outside of which is a relatively modern house. There is a drop (D 1.2m) from the site interior to outer ground level here, perhaps indicating the site of the house was substantially dug out. There are two cashels (CL004-005---- and CL004-006----), c. 120m SW and c. 60m to the WSW, and another enclosure (CL004-010----) lies c. 210m SSE. Several of the field walls surrounding this enclosure and the neighbouring monuments are likely ancient.
