Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Coorleigh South

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Coorleigh South holds a circular earthwork fifty-one metres across, marked by a one-point-seven-metre bank and an external ditch. People called it a fairy fort, perhaps because the broken entrances and hidden interior resisted ordinary explanation. It stands on a south-east-facing slope where pasture covers the scarped edge, preserving a shape that human hands clearly formed before memory faded.
In pasture, on SE-facing slope. Roughly circular area (51m N-S; 43m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (H 1.7m) E->NNE; scarp (H 1.5m) elsewhere; with external fosse (D 0.8m) N->S. Breaks in bank to SSE and to SW (Wth c. 3m), modern gap to W (Wth 2.6m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
