Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cooney is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Cooney, County Sligo, Ireland. The earthwork sits on a ridge near the Ox Mountains and appears on the 1913 OS map as a semicircular area about thirty metres across. Two earthen banks and a wide fosse enclose the interior, while dense overgrowth now blocks entry. A stone field boundary cuts across the southern edge of the rath.
In undulating pasture, on top of a ridge near the foot of the Ox Mountains. Indicated on the 1913 OS 6-inch map as a hachured semicircular area (diam c. 30m) on the N side of a field boundary. The interior, which is inaccessible due to dense overgrowth, is enclosed by two earthen banks (inner bank: Wth 4m; ext. H 2.3m; outer bank: Wth 1.1m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.5m) with an intervening fosse (Wth 5m). The S perimeter of the rath is truncated by an E-W stone field boundary. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008
