Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cooleeny

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Cooleeny, County Galway: a 28-metre earthen ring on a ridge above pastureland, its stone-and-clay bank still highest at the north. People may have lived there before the fields took it back, or the land may have simply rolled a circle into being and waited for belief. Either way the ridge keeps its shape, holding what it can of the hands that built it.
On a ridge in undulating pastureland, to the NW of Cooleeny House. Poorly preserved circular rath (diam. 28m) defined by a bank of earth and stone best preserved at N. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 1 December 2017
