Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cloonrane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cloonrane stands on a Galway ridge, its thirty-metre bank still drawing breath from bog and grass. People may have circled it, feared it, or simply passed while it watched the sky. Modern breaches carve through ancient skin, yet the shape holds.
On a ridge in grassland surrounded by scrub and bogland. Subcircular rath (N-S 35m, E-W 32m), in fair condition, defined by a bank. Numerous breaches appear modern. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
