Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cloonbrien

In improved pasture 130m N of a watercourse that marks the townland boundary with Clogher West. Enclosure (LI039-062----) lies 225m to SE. Depicted on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map as a raised oval-shaped area. It is shown on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as a raised circular-shaped area (diam. 30m) defined by a scarp with fosse and outer bank from SW-N-SE. In 1840 the Ordnance Survey recorded ‘There are also two ancient forts in this townland. One in the N called Lisheengorm, and the other in the S’ (OSNB Abbeyfeale to Bruree 137). Visible as a circular-shaped area delimited by trees on OSi orthophoto taken between 2005-2012. Visible on Google Earth orthoimage dated 20/09/2020, with a farm track, running E-W, to the immediate N. See attached Google Earth orthoimages.
