Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrigeen (orrery and Kilmore By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Thirty metres of buried rope and ditch mark a forgotten home in Carrigeen, where shadows still dance across the grass. People may have lived there before the fields swallowed the stones, raising walls against rain and danger. The earth kept the shape long after the hands left it, waiting for someone to remember the heat of ordinary life inside the circle.
Cropmark of bank (E->SW) and complete external fosse of circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) visible in aerial photograph (CASAP, July 1989). Linear cropmarks of levelled field fences, some of which are shown on 1842 OS 6-inch maps, noted in same field. Possible ringfort and Man-made underground passage (CO007-108001-; CO007-108002-) c. 30m to WSW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
