Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrigan (kilconny Ed)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Carrigan, County Cavan: an oval earthwork 27 metres east-west and 18 north-south, shaped by a scarp and shallow fosse. Its entrance has vanished, leaving the ring closed to human memory. People may have lived there before forgetting the door, or the land may have taken the shape back. Either way the fort still holds its line, waiting for someone reckless enough to walk its edge at dusk.
Raised oval area (dims. c. 27m E-W; c. 18 N-S) defined by a scarp and a wide, shallow fosse. Original entrance not recognisable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
