Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrigagrenane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Carrigagrenane holds a genuine ringfort, not a fantasy circle. Earth and stone still mark the edge of a place where people lived, worked and faced the dark. The fairy name is a story later layers added to an older human address.
In pasture, on SE-facing slope. Circular, slightly raised area (diam. 28m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (H 2.35m), stone faced in parts; external fosse (D 0.55m) WSW->NNE. Gap (Wth 2m) in bank to E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
