Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cargagh (upper Loughtee By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fairy forts at all. They are human dwellings from before written history, misnamed because people stopped understanding them. The true name is ringfort: a circular home with a bank, a ditch and one entrance. Everything else is costume.
Raised circular area (int. diam. 31.5m) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank and a wide, deep, waterlogged fosse which has been infilled from WSW-W-NNW. Modern building against outer face of bank at N. Original entrance at SE represented by a substantial break in bank with accompanying causeway. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
