Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Sheenaun Fort in Beagh Beg is a well-preserved circular rath, almost twenty-five metres across, defined by an earthen bank on a grassy rise. A gap at the east-southeast may mark the original entrance, inviting entry into a space where human hands shaped the land before memory faded. The fort endures in gentle undulation, holding the shape of a life no longer spoken but still visible in the curve of its bank.
On a rise in gently undulating grassland. Named 'Sheenaun Fort' on OS Fair Plan, it consists of a well-preserved overgrown circular rath (D 24.9m) defined by a bank. A gap at ESE may mark the original entrance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
