Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Barrinclay

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Barrinclay held a two-banked fort thirty-five metres across on a south-east facing slope. Farmers levelled the earth and planted it, erasing the very walls that once defined the boundary between human life and the unknown. The land swallowed the structure, yet the shape remains visible through memory and the quiet resistance of the soil beneath the crops.
Shown on 1842 and 1904 OS 6-inch maps as hachured bivallate enclosure (diam. c.35m). In tillage, on SE-facing slope. Levelled; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
