Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Barnahely

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Barnahely holds a broken ring of earth and shadow where human hands shaped the slope before memory faded. The bank stands one metre high on part of the circle, while a deeper ditch cuts elsewhere, marking a boundary made strong enough to keep out trouble or claim the land. cattle may have moved through that southern valley, and people may have watched the weather come over it. The fort no longer answers to a named family, but its shape still separates inside from outside, and that is enough to remember it as a home rather than a heap of soil.
In pasture, on S-facing slope. Roughly circular area (45m E-W; 38m N-S) enclosed by earthen bank (H 1m) SW->SE; scarp elsewhere; external fosse (D c. 2m) SE->NW. Interior slopes down to S. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
