What is recorded here
Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballysumaghan is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Ballysumaghan, County Sligo, Ireland. It occupies a rise in undulating rough grazing and presents a twenty-four-metre circular area enclosed by two banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank uses earth and stone with internal facing, while a wide berm separates the fosse from the outer bank. Gaps appear in the outer bank at east and northwest, and overgrowth covers much of the perimeter and interior.
On a rise, in undulating rough grazing. A raised circular area (diam. 24m) enclosed by two banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank (Wth 3.8m; int. H 0.9; ext. H 1.4m) consists of earth and stone with internal stone-facing. The intervening fosse (Wth 3.6m; D 0.6m) is evident all round. A wide berm (Wth 5.6m) separates the fosse and outer bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.5m). The berm and the outer bank are truncated NNW-NNE by an E-W field boundary. There are gaps in the outer bank at E and NW. A band of boggy ground and rushes (Wth 1.5m), evident only outside the outer bank at SE, may indicate a silted-up outer fosse. Overgrowth covers the perimeter of the rath and partially covers the interior.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005).
