Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballyrune

Fairy fort in Ballyrune, County Limerick: a level circular pasture, twenty-six metres across, ringed by an earthen bank still standing halfway to a man’s chest. The southern arc has steepened into a scarp, the western edge keeps a narrow gap, and thorns strangle the verges where the soil turns over. Cattle graze inside what may have been a household, a refuge, or a boundary marker for people whose names never reached the surface. The fort remains visible because the land kept its shape long after the hands that made it disappeared.
