Fairy forts across Ireland are often false origins. They are human ringforts, built and abandoned centuries before fairy tales became popular. In Ballyroe the earth may still hold a boundary marker, a doorway or a chamber buried under grass. The fairy label is a story later people invented because they stopped understanding the function.
