Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Ballyleary is a circular earthen ringfort with two banks and a intervening fosse, occupying an east-facing pasture slope. Its inner bank rises 1.3m and is heavily overgrown, while the outer bank reaches 0.85m with partial stone facing. The interior slopes downward toward the northeast, and a gap marks the eastern entrance. This is a rath, a ancient defensive or domestic enclosure shaped by human hands and now returned to grass and mystery.
In pasture, on E-facing slope. Circular area (29.5m N-S; 29m E-W) enclosed by two earthen banks with intervening fosse. Inner bank (int. H 1.3m) heavily overgrown; gap to E. Outer bank (H 0.85m) stone faced in parts. Interior slopes down to NE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
