Knockacarn holds a circular rath with two low scarps and a wide berm, visible from NE to SW across reclaimed pasture. People may have lived there, marked boundaries or simply watched the sky turn above the ridge. Later fields cut through the ancient line, yet the shape remains clear enough to walk around and imagine.

In reclaimed pasture at the E end of a ridge named Knockacarn, with wide views from NE to SW. Hachured on the 1897 OS 25-inch plan and 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). This circular rath (int. dims. 28.4m N-S; 27.3m E-W; ext. dims. 50m E-W; 35.5m N-S) is defined by two low scarps (H 0.2m each) with an intervening berm (Wth 3-4m). There are traces of a possible outer fosse at between E and SE. A later field wall overlies the inner scarp from WNW to ENE. A field bank and ditches cut the enclosing elements from SW to W. Another rath (CL009-099002-) and cairn (CL009-099001-) lie c. 30m and c. 80m to the W respectively. Compiled by: Olive Alcock and Conn Herriott Date of upload: 26 May 2022

A fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Ballyhomulta, likely dating to the early medieval period, is associated with local folklore of fairy activity and otherworldly connections. It appears as an enclosure on early Ordnance Survey maps and is situated on a prominent ridge with extensive views.
