Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballygeale

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No wall, gate or stone still stands in Ballygeale. The earth itself forgot the shape after people stopped remembering it. What remains is a hidden circle under grass, waiting for rain or plough to reveal how large human life once drew its boundary.
In gentle undulating pasture, moderate views in all directions, enclosure (LI021-023----) lies 150m to N. No surface remains visible. Depicted as a circular shaped enclosure on the 1840 OS 6-inch map and a sub-circular shaped area (approx. dims. 21m N-S; 24m E-W) defined by a scarp on the 1897 OS 25-inch map. Faint trace of cropmark of levelled monument visible on Google Earth orthoimage taken 02/07/2018. See attached Google Earth orthoimages Compiled by: Fiona Rooney Date of upload: 9 July 2020

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
