Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballyenahan South

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Ballyenahan South is a circular earthen ringfort, thirty-four metres across, on a gentle south-facing slope in County Cork. Its low banks and shallow fosse mark a place where people may have lived, kept animals, or simply drawn a line between inside and outside. The name fairy fort suggests later people believed the shape belonged to another kind of resident, yet the clear circular plan and mapped banks point to human craft.
In pasture, on gentle S-facing slope. Circular area (34m N-S; 34m E-W) enclosed by low, earthen bank (int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.6m), intervening fosse (D 0.2m) and outer earthen bank. Outer bank hachured ENE->SW and depicted as solid line with hachures SW-> ENE on 1935 OS 6-inch map. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
