Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ayle

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Ayle, County Kerry: a circular earthen enclosure mapped in 1841 and 1915, later cut by a fieldbank and levelled for decades, yet still visible in 1974 aerial photographs. It may have been a boundary marker, a seasonal shelter or a child’s climbing ring before ploughs and pragmatism removed it. The earth remembers shape longer than people do.
This site appears on the 1841-42 and 1915-16 OS maps as a circular enclosure. On the later edition, however, it has been slightly cut on its S sector by a fieldbank. This site has been levelled for the last 20- 30 years, but it can still be picked up on the Geological Survey of Ireland aerial photographs (1974). The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 338. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
