Fairy fort in Ayle, County Kerry: a circular earthen enclosure mapped in 1841 and 1915, later cut by a fieldbank and levelled for decades, yet still visible in 1974 aerial photographs. It may have been a boundary marker, a seasonal shelter or a child’s climbing ring before ploughs and pragmatism removed it. The earth remembers shape longer than people do.

This site appears on the 1841-42 and 1915-16 OS maps as a circular enclosure. On the later edition, however, it has been slightly cut on its S sector by a fieldbank. This site has been levelled for the last 20- 30 years, but it can still be picked up on the Geological Survey of Ireland aerial photographs (1974). The above description is derived from C.
