Excavation is a medieval building and pit on the NW side of Main Street in County Meath, Ireland, discovered during a 1987 rescue excavation. A builder’s trench cut a large pit with steep sides, filled with yellow clay and dark organic layers, beneath a substantial wall. The place is not a grand hall in the facts given, but a buried edge of human activity, marked by a pit deep enough to hold what a town stopped carrying.
Situated on a S-facing slope and on the NW side of Main Street. An archaeological rescue excavation and watching brief (E000404) in 1987 uncovered evidence of a medieval building (ME036-048046-) and other features. In the course of the watching brief a builder’s trench cut a large medieval pit (dims c. 3.5m x 1.5m plus; D 1.5m plus) with steeply sloping sides at the NW edge of the development site. The pit was filled with yellow clays leavened with dark organic layers and it cut through stratified medieval layers which were beneath a substantial NE-SW wall (ME036-048050-). (Walsh 1990-91, 45)
