Excavation

On a fairly severe SE-facing slope down to the River Fergus, c. 100m to the E and in an area subject to periodic flooding. Listed as Earthwork complex in the SMR (1992) and in the RMP (1996). Due to the proximity of Clonroad Castle some 400m to the NW excavations were undertaken by John Hunt in 1946 during operations to build a sewage treatment plant. No structural features other than a drain were found. Some animal bone, mussel shells and one human skull fragment were found in the lower layers of fill which consisted of ash and charcoal. Fragments of medieval pottery were scattered across the site the most important being a fragment of Polychrome ware. Seven bronze fragments were noted, one being the spout of a vessel.
