Ewyas Harold Castle

Ewyas Harold Castle is one of only four pre-Conquest castles in England, a massive stone-and-clay motte rising thirteen metres above its ditch at the southern end of the Golden Valley. Built around 1050 by Osbern Pentecost upon older English foundations, it stood as a private fortress that threatened Anglo-Saxon freedom until Earl Godwin ordered its dismantling in 1052. William fitz Osbern re-fortified the site decades later, and Harold of Ewyas eventually gave the place its name while founding a priory within the outer bailey. The castle changed hands through marriage and royal grant until it lay ruinous and gone by 1538, leaving behind only earthworks and scattered stone that still mark the spur where lords once defied kings.
