David Beaton, the last cardinal of Scotland, owned Ethie Castle before his murder in St Andrews in 1546. The castle still holds his sitting room and a secret staircase that climbs into the great hall above. Beaton may still walk those rooms at night, according to local story, joining the grey lady already said to haunt the place.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Ethie Castle as Plantation (post Medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Ethie Castle was built in the 17th century by the Keith family, a prominent Scottish noble family. It is remembered as a historic plantation house and an example of early Scottish domestic architecture.
