Sir Ernest Shackleton, Polar Explorer, and his ship ‘Endurance’ sailed from Millbay Docks at the start of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914-17). Sir Ernest Shackleton was a renowned British polar explorer who led the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition aiming to cross Antarctica, though his ship Endurance became trapped in ice, making him remembered for his leadership and survival skills during the subsequent ordeal.
