What is recorded here

Maistorgluishy Fort still holds its shape in County Kerry, a square earthwork with rounded corners rising two metres above the pasture. The bank has gaps now, and the south half slopes away like a room emptied of furniture, yet the line remains clear enough for aerial cameras to read decades later. People may have stood inside that boundary, marked it, lived beside it or simply walked past it. The stones and soil have kept the shape long after the hands that made it disappeared.

In level pasture, at the top of a S-facing slope. A raised square area (c. 35m N-S; c. 35m E-W), with rounded corners, defined by an earthen bank (int. H 0.1m; ext. H 2.6m). Some large boulders, possibly from field clearance, occur on the bank along the E and NW arcs. There are numerous gaps in the bank. The S half of the interior slopes down to the S. The enclosure is indicated as a circular area (diam. c. 38m) on the 1846 OS 6-inch map. It is outlined on the 1894 OS 6-inch map as a square area with a slightly curving W side and a hachured S side. It is visible in aerial photographs (GSIAP, V 396, W 447) taken in 1977 as a square earthwork with rounded corners. This is probably 'Maistorgluishy Fort' which was recorded in the SW side of the townland in the 1840s (OSNB, Kilcummin, no. 2, 34).
