Enclosure in Gorteen (dangan Ed)

On a generally level area of rock outcrop and mixed woodland. The monument is described by Westropp (1914-16, 66) as ‘…a late ring….in it’s garth….is a circular house-site…’. Indicated on OS historic mapping as a circular enclosure incorporating a field boundary NW-NE. A circular area (18m N-S; 19m E-W) defined by the remains of a collapsed drystone wall (int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.5m; Wth at top 1.7m; overall Wth 4.0m) consisting of quite large, rounded and completely moss-covered stones. There is no obvious entrance. The interior is uneven due to loose moss-covered stones scattered intermittently amongst quite a dense cover of Beech trees. A concentration of stones off-centre to W may signify an internal structure, however this is obscured by a thicket of small trees and dead branches and it is not possible to clarify the nature or extent of this feature. A later drystone field wall (long-axis WSW-ENE), built of more angular stone and of different construction, is situated on top of the enclosing elements NW-N-NE.
