Enclosure in Drinan — Report the wrong picture

Two circular ditches cut through each other in Drinan, the larger spanning thirty-four metres and the smaller twenty-four, locking together like a binary code written in earth rather than symbols. Bones lay east to west at the heart of the smaller circle while a zoomorphic brooch and loop-headed pin emerged from the larger ditch, suggesting that death and ornament shared the same transaction. Charcoal dates both rings to the sixth century, yet they remain tucked inside a modern housing estate, waiting for someone to notice the geometry beneath the grass.

This monument was identified during monitoring (Licence no. 03E1362ext) in advance of development. It consists of two intercutting circular enclosures, the larger of which (34m diam.) has a ditch 1.6m in width and from which a decorated loop-headed pin and a zoomorphic penannular brooch were recovered. Centrally placed within the smaller enclosure (24m diam.) were extended burials orientated E-W. Charcoal from the smaller enclosure ditch gave a calibrated date of AD 533–648 while charcoal from the larger enclosure ditch gave a calibrated date of AD 567–658 (Moriarity 2005).
