What is recorded here
Enclosure in Carrowcastle is a roughly oval raised area about twenty metres across on a pasture rise in County Mayo, its shallow scarp clipped by a modern fence and sections quarried away. It sits near another enclosure and a rath, suggesting a settled landscape rather than a lonely marker. The ground slopes east toward wet earth, where blackthorn creeps inward and human traces blur into soil.
In pasture, located on a rise, with a fall of ground to E to an area of wet ground.
Roughly oval raised area (c. 19.5m N−S; c. 16m E−W) defined by a scarp (H 0.7m). The interior slopes down by as much as 1-1.5m from centre to E, mirroring the natural slope. Short semicircular sections of the scarp at N and SE−S have been quarried out. A N−S field fence clips the scarp along the W side of the enclosure, and remnants of a perpendicular field wall extends W from it across the S half of the interior. Grass cover, with blackthorn scrub encroaching from the field fence/hedgerow at W. There is an enclosure (MA040-099----) 45m to NW and a rath (MA040-051----) 90m to NW.
