Enclosure in Ballynagraigue

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Enclosure in Ballynagraigue is a low earthen ring on a Kerry hilltop, large enough to walk around but small enough that the whole countryside arrives at once. Its grassed interior holds faint stone mounds, and local identification calls it a disused children's burial ground. That means the place may have been set apart for the smallest dead, while still facing every direction at once.
Situated on the crest of a hill, with extensive views in all directions, this site consists of a circular area enclosed by an earthen bank. The internal diameter of the site measures 33m N-S, and 35m E-W; the bank is low and measures c 5m wide. The exterior height of the bank varies from .4m-1.6m, and its internal height .3m-.8m. The internal area is at a higher level than the surrounding land, and contains small low mounds of stones, now grassed over. It is marked on OS maps as 'Children's Burial Ground (disused)'. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 874. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 3 August 2013
