Enclosure in Ballyelly

In a well-sheltered slightly hollowed area on the NW slopes of a Slieve Elva, with commanding views WSW–NE. A poorly preserved roughly oval enclosure (int. dims. 19m NNW–SSE; 14m WSW–ENE) defined by a bank of stone and earth (Wth 1.6–2.1m; H 0.65–0.8m) only clearly evident from NE–WSW and as a slight scarp at N. A later field wall obscures the enclosing element along the NW while from WSW–NW a feint low stony bank forms the limit. An entrance (Wth 0.8m) to the NE is probably original. The enclosure lies within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL004-016001-), covering an area of c. 8sqkm. A cashel (CL004-016011-), also within that field system, is located c. 60m to the SSE.
